San Carlos Holds Social Media Day

The city held social media training sessions for businesses.

San Carlos celebrated its newly proclaimed "Social Media Day" this past Thursday with a treasure hunt inspired “meetup” at Hot Harvest Nights Farmers Market. Social Media Day is a day to celebrate the revolution of media becoming a social dialogue.

Recognition of the day was commemorated by hosting a meetup sponsored by the San Carlos Chamber of Commerce and produced by Bullfrog Media and Roaring Pajamas. The meetup included a treasure hunt to help encourage learning about Social Media using Twitter, Gowalla and Fring.

Participants scoured San Carlos downtown businesses searching for answers to clues using smart phones and social networks. A raffle was conducted and prizes were given to players who “checked-in” to four of the 10 correct clues. Prizes included: a television from Best Buy, VoIP calls from Fring, jewelry from Geoffrey's Jewelers and Giants tickets from Collins Insurance. The turnout was great for a first year event and lead several people into business on Laurel Street.

“We're very pleased and expect participation to grow as we continue to host similar events, “ said Melanie Yunk of Bullfrog Media. She thought it was a very successful way to drive people into business and exclaimed, “who doesn't like new people dropping by your business to say hello?”

San Carlos joined eight other cities in officially declaring June 30 Social Media Day. Other cities include: New York City, New York: Vancouver, B.C.; Las Vegas and Reno, Nevada; San Jose, California; Dublin, Ireland; and Toronto, Canada, as well as the state of Arizona.
