Zoneil Maharaj is excited to call Union City his new home. Born in Fiji and raised in Stockton, Calif., he spent the last seven years living, learning and working in San Francisco. While he enjoyed the excitement of the fast-paced city, he looks forward to being a member of Union City's cozy community.

A graduate of San Francisco State University's journalism department, Zoneil has worked for various publications. He was the managing editor of his university's student magazine, a staff writer/podcast host for PopandPolitics.com (then under former NPR host Farai Chideya's tutelage), an intern and contributor for music magazine XLR8R, an editor for Asian American lifestyle magazine Hyphen and, most recently, an arts and culture fellow with WireTap Magazine and The Nation Institute. His freelance work has appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle, Oakland Tribune, East Bay Express, The Bold Italic and The Record (Stockton), among others.

Zoneil also loves working with youth. As a high school program coordinator for The Center for Integration and Improvement of Journalism, he helped re-launch defunct school publications at multiple high schools in the Bay Area and worked with dozens of youth in the center's Bay Area Multicultural Media Academy.

If you see Zoneil around town without a notepad and pen in his pockets, tell him to get back to work! He promises to do right by the community, so feel free to drop him a line any time.
