The bus system has been in place in San Mateo county since 1976, when multiple bus companies joined together under the SamTrans name.
The company is run by a board of nine appointed members; two county supervisors; one "transportation expert" appointed by the county Board of Supervisors; three city councilpersons, appointed by the cities in the county to represent the county's judicial districts; and three citizens appointed by the other six board members.
SamTrans has 10 different routes covering the area and works with BART and Caltrain to better serve all of San Mateo county and the greater Bay Area.
