The school was started 15 years ago, making the San Carlos Charter Learning Center is the oldest charter school in California and one of the oldest operating charter schools in the United States. Started in February of 1993 by the State of California, the school began with 85 students in 1994 and now maintains 260 children.  

The school has won a number of awards and distinctions for its innovative approaches to education.

For 47 years, Heather Elementary School has sat atop the San Carlos Hills on 11 acres of land. Serving grades K-4,More Heather is one of four elementary schools in San Carlos and is also a public charter school.

Diamond Aviation, located on the San Carlos Airport grounds, is a charter service and flight school. In business forMore over 15 years, the school offers one-on-one flight lessons for helicopters and airplanes. Diamond Aviation is a certified Cessna Pilot Center and they provide private, instrument, commercial and multi-engine training for airplanes and helicopters. San Carlos School District Administrative Office

The San Carlos School District Administrative Office is in charge of the area's four elementary schools, two middleMore schools and a charter school, which make up a district that is one of the most sought-after in the country.

The elementary schools include Arundel, Brittan Acres, Heather and White Oaks, while the two middle schools are Central Middle and Tierra Linda. According to the school districts website, "the percentages of San Carlos students meeting or exceeding grade level standards are significantly higher than the current state and federal thresholds for excellent schools."
