According to test scores, the school'sMore students score near the top on statewide assessment tests.</p> <p>The school was started 15 years ago, making the San Carlos Charter Learning Center is the oldest charter school in California and one of the oldest operating charter schools in the United States. Started in February of 1993 by the State of California, the school began with 85 students in 1994 and now maintains 260 children.  </p> <p>The school has won a number of awards and distinctions for its innovative approaches to education.</p>

The San Carlos School District Administrative Office is in charge of the area's four elementary schools, two middleMore schools and a charter school, which make up a district that is one of the most sought-after in the country.</p> <p>The elementary schools include Arundel, Brittan Acres, Heather and White Oaks, while the two middle schools are Central Middle and Tierra Linda. According to the school districts website, "the percentages of San Carlos students meeting or exceeding grade level standards are significantly higher than the current state and federal thresholds for excellent schools."</p> <p>Mark Olbert is the school board president and leads a staff including vice-president Tom Quiggle. San Carlos School of Ballet

The San Carlos School of Ballet has been developing dancers in San Carlos for over 65 years. The studio is located onMore residential, tree-lined Walnut Street in the Casa de Flores building. Founded by Anabel Mueller in 1945, the students are now taught by Karen Kirk and Michael Lowe, working with dancers from five years old up to adult students.</p> <p>The studio offers daily classes, as well as performances and intensive training programs, focusing on classical ballet and providing a positive environment for young and older dancers alike.</p>

Arundel School

Established in 1948, Arundel Elementary School is one of four  elementary school's in San Carlos, serving gradesMore K-4. With 400 students, the school retains it's small class sizes with no classroom holding more than 20 students. </p> <p>The school saw a 13 point increase in STAR scores in English and a 1 percent increase in math, making them the highest scoring public elementary school in San Carlos with an average of 80.3.</p> <p>The school's website lists arrival and dismissal times for parents:</p> <ul> <li>School begins at 8:25am for all students in grades 1-4. A warning bell rings at 8:20am.</li> <li>Kindergarten operates on an early/late schedule. Early group runs from 8:25am to 1:35pm and late group runs from 9:10am to 2:25pm.</li> <li>Grades 1-3 are dismissed at 2:25pm and Grade 4 is dismissed at 2:45pm. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Central Middle School

As one of two middle schools in San Carlos, Central Middle School boasts some of the highest test scores in theMore area.</p> <p>STAR scores showed dramatic increases among eighth-graders in history (20 points), science (8 points) and English (5 points), though they did see a decrease in math scores this past year (2 points). Those scores, however, put Central Middle School in the upper echelon of Bay Area middle schools.</p> <p>Principal Lynette Hovland says the school's mission statement is "to create an exemplary middle school in San Carlos for all students by providing a rich curriculum with well-defined standards that empower students to develop and appreciate learning and a commitment to responsible citizenship."</p> <p>For parents, an online service known as "School Loop" is provided to keep them abreast of activities and happenings. Various other parent/teacher mailing lists are also available. A PTA has also been designated to ensure parent involvement in the school.</p> <p>Central also has a vibrant and successful sports program, including basketball, soccer and baseball for both boys and girls. </p> <p>Most students at Central come from White Oaks Elementary, Brittan Acres or Arundel.</p>
