My debit card was compromised at Lunardi's last week. Charges made at midnight Friday night inRead More Davis. I rarely use is at a debit. Only when I need cash. Won't do that again. Always use your debit card as a credit!!!
Brenda June 19, 2013 at 04:47 pm
I am wondering whether anyone's credit card was compromised? I purposely NEVER use the Self CheckoutRead More anymore in ANY store after what happened to me in Lucky last year. I was one of the people whose info got stolen. Fortunately it was a credit card, so we canceled the card when we realized there was fraud on it. I never use a debit card to pay for anything. I think it's too risky. Credit cards offer better protection.

Thank you for coming to the council meeting and recognizing the green business awards! This is theRead More second time A+ Japanese Auto Repair got recognized as a green business. We went through and were the first shop is San Mateo County to achieve the certification when it first started! Great job to all other businesses that have chosen to more forward in "greening" their business! It takes a little bit of work and money but it forces you to think about your processes and will ultimately save your business time and money. - Eric Sevim, Co-Owner http://www.aplusjapaneseautorepair.com/

Where are all the kids of these families going to go to school? The schools are already atRead More capacity now. As far as "This shows that developers have great confidence in Redwood City" To me it shows something different - RWC values developers more than the community and will allow rampant growth as long as they get more tax revenues and bigger salaries. What about the traffic these developments will bring? Who will cover the infrastructure costs of roads, fire department and water? How many of these developments are going to offer low cost housing? And " The city expects that the new housing units will attract a different type of person to Redwood City" Yes, they want to change RWC into a Palo Alto or Los Altos and many of the low income people that have been residents for years will be pushed out of the area. It's already been happening for the last decade. Look at the traffic we have now. It's a pipe dream that everyone is going to be walking around - it might be that is the only way you can get anywhere with all the added traffic congestion the city will have.

Well Vanessa, I would need to think about a good anchor store, probably a market for groceryRead More shopping and an Apple Store. In addition, I think that Redwood City should have at least 2 hours free parking. I know families that shop Menlo Park, and San Carlos to avoid paying for parking. It doesn't make sense to have shops, etc downtown where customers and people that work there have to pay for public parking. It's like shooting yourself in the foot!
Reality Check June 5, 2013 at 05:39 pm
Try Googling "shoup free parking" to learn what the nation's top expert on parking says isRead More all wrong with free parking. Hint: a lot.

Bravo to Jacob Bourne for telling it like it is! I've been boycotting Wal-Mart and Sam's Club forRead More years, because Wal-Mart is a horribly unethical company that damages every community it enters and treats its workers and customers like garbage. Target and Costco are very different kinds of stores, offering very different types of experiences, though, so Costco can't really replace Target in my shopping behavior. It would be great if Costco opened a more conventional type of store to compete with Target head on.
HotRod June 3, 2013 at 01:21 am
DON'T YOU DARE compare a Costco Worker to a Target Worker to a Walmart Worker. Costco employeesRead More speak English, are intelligent and are courteous. And that is how it works in this country if your smarter you get paid more!!!!!! Don't like??? Tough, it tis the way it is!!!

Ben, I write in caps all the time because it's easier for me to see vision wise. I get really tiredRead More of others commenting on the cap thing!!! people who have a harder time seeing appreciate it. Now with that said, I am well aware of the effects of smoking, as I am sure every one is by now. Saying your sorry over the fact I smoke and what "could" happen doesn't mean it will...and yes I know all about statistics. That is actually a back handed comment on your part. Yes, I am all for businesses to make thir won rules regarding their companies policies. I also think it is a shame that smokers are villianized as much as they are. There are some pretty rude people out there but I am not a rude smoker. I always ask first if I am near someone who is not smoking. I don't toss ciggarette butts in the streets and I also am not out there protesting with signs and villianizing the right of starbucks or any other business for their decisions.
Ben Fuller June 3, 2013 at 09:07 pm
Hi Kay: Well, I'm sorry about the vision issue and now understand the all caps discussion. So pointRead More well taken. And I too agree with your right to smoke cigarettes. This is your choice and who am I to comment on that. My challenge is that I have asthma and the slightest bit of smoke can set off a coughing fit. So, this explains my strong stance against other people smoking around me. But I do really appreciate conscientious people who do their best to consider others and can tell that you are one of those people.
Kay E. Tealer June 3, 2013 at 11:48 pm
Ben, Thanks for the kind words and understanding....ditto!

Costco is definitely doing something right - many of the RWC employees have been there for years.Read More When they closed for nearly a year to rebuild, the employees were relocated to other stores, and I saw some of them down at the Mountain View store. I'm pretty sure the other chain stores wouldn't have treated their hourly workers so well !

Among all the supporters isn't there one competent attorney who can get an injunction to keep theRead More rink from being destroyed and who can sue SPI Holding, and if necessary the City, to enforce the Master Plan Agreement? A toilet and an astro turf field are useless to ice skaters. I smell something rotten in the Mayor and the Ciyty Council's excuses. At least one skater must have a parent or family member who is an attorney with some sense of decency to do the work pro bono.
Mike Swire May 30, 2013 at 10:40 pm
Please sign our petition to the San Mateo City Council, asking them to support the rink:Read More http://www.change.org/petitions/mayor-david-lim-san-mateo-city-council-please-don-t-take-away-our-ice-rink Also, please join our Facebook group to keep posted on future developments: https://www.facebook.com/groups/401665786560692/?fref=ts

Actually, the city council does have the power to do something. SPI Holdings and it's owner, Mr.Read More Dennis Wong have unilaterally decided to close Ice Chalet by terminating its lease. Although it may be true that the city cannot force SPI Holdings to renew that lease, the city does have final approval on the recreational use for that land. The statement that Mr. Lim made in his OP Ed indicating that the Ice Chalet sits on property zoned for business is incorrect. Unless and until something else is approved the land use for that site is designated for an ice rink and only an ice rink. The City Attorney has advised SPI that they cannot touch the building until this matter is resolved. We are a community of thousands and we will continue to fight for this rink for as long it takes. We love our kids and our rink and we want it to stay in the community. We are asking the City Council to represent the people and fight for what is right. The community has had to fight for the rink twice in the past. At one time, the rink closed for two years before it reopened. We will do what it takes to keep our rink for our kids and families . We are not giving up. We are not going away.
Rendering of proposed Transit Village Project Photo courtesy of City of San Carlos
Ben Fuller May 20, 2013 at 01:07 pm
We are disappointed with this coverage that essentially provides free marketing for a corporation,Read More Legacy Partners, taking their quotes unedited and not offering a reply from the GESC neighborhood most affected by these proposed buildings The truth is we accomplished nearly nothing in mediations although see that Legacy is using the fact they took place to market this oversized, out-of-scale project. This project aims to put 75% of San Carlos' future housing needs on a tiny strip across from the GESC neighborhood with life-threatening pedestrian crossings into the rest of San Carlos. The buildings are slated to tower 55 feet above our homes. To call this a transit village is merely for tax purposes. There is nothing in the project that promotes public transportation. Since this article was essentially a marketing piece disguised as an article, please expect an official response. Also, we hope that this too could get the type of placement on the top of the page that this so-called "news" is receiving.

Looks like the old Baklava place is turning into a Burmes restaurant...
Kris May 10, 2013 at 07:28 pm
I agree with everyone about having a soup and salad place. There really isn't much in SC for aRead More quick, healthy and inexpensive meal. How many wine bars and overpriced Italian restaurants does one small town need? I would love to see something like the SF Soup Co, like the one in Burlingame, in SC.

Brenda, I agree - Ethiopian would be so awesome! But I disagree about Mexican - Coyote Cantina hadRead More the freshest ingredients - avocado, chicken, etc. - and handmade salsa everyday. I was SO sorry to see that place go, I wish Tom would give it a try again. We need a high quality Mexican place - Mexican food is so healthy if you do it right. I walked past the new Burmese place yesterday and it smells great - lots of garlic!
