The San Carlos Airport is inviting aviation fans young and old alike to stop by today for a special chance to get an up-close look at some unique aircraft.

The aim of San Carlos Airport Day 2013 is "to engage the community to learn about the airport and have a fun day," according to the San Carlos Airport Association.

The day will be especially exciting for children, who are invited to take a free plane ride. There will also be bounce houses and play areas.

Other highlights include the opportunity to check out the Turbine Toucan, which airport officials said is the world's most powerful aerobatic biplane.

Also on display will be a World War II-era Mustang fighter, a Bell UH-1 Iroquois "Huey" helicopter and other aircraft, organizers said.

Visitors can also tinker around on a flight-training simulator or visit the Hiller Aviation Museum next door to the airport.

The free event takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the airport, located at 620 Airport Drive on the east side of U.S. Highway 101.

The airport is owned by San Mateo County and has been at its current site since 1948.
