San Carlos Lose Game, Has Winning Season

A young, inexperienced team went a long way for coach Brian Ramsey.

Ryan Strombom will return to Lewis and Clark College in Oregon this fall and play baseball for the Pioneers at the Huston Sports Complex.

San Carlos Joe DiMaggio baseball teammates like St. Francis High grad Connor Basch, Carlmont grad Josh Faulkner and Brian Anthony may not be so lucky.

Basch is hoping to get a tryout at Division I Washington this fall, while the others may also play somewhere, or they may not. That's the tough part of leaving high school behind.

All four will be too old for the DiMaggio program, though there's an outside chance, depending on whether a rule change is voted upon, one or two may be eligible to return.

"They are the best four kids I've ever coached," Seals coach Brian Ramsey said after San Carlos lost to the Sierra Sun Devils, 17-10, in the championship game of the DiMaggio World Series earlier this week at Wooster High in Reno. "I'd love to keep all four. They are great kids."

They helped San Carlos win the Peninsula DiMaggio League and reach the championship game of the postseason tournament, the Seals' 30th game of the season.

"We won the games we needed to get to the postseason," said Ramsey, who played at Sequoia High and Canada College before stepping into coaching 25 years ago. "We put ourselves in good situations."

Just like Strombom, Basch, Faulkner and Anthony will do for the rest of their lives.
