San Carlos Residents Contribute to Serra Football Success

Anthony Toms, Andrew Bowler, Mark Celentano and Matt Jacobs have helped Serra High's football team to an 8-1 record with one to play.

Whether it is offense, defense or special teams, there's a San Carlos resident on the field for the Serra High football team.

It's been a big year for the Padres thus far. They are 8-1 overall, and 5-1 in the West Catholic Athletic League with one regular-season game remaining to play.

Bellarmine Prep handed Serra its only loss of the season and the Padres lost that one, 35-34. Should Serra go on to beat St. Francis next Saturday (1 p.m. at Serra), that one point differentiates the champion from second place.

Serra's high-powered offense averages nearly 40 points and 400 yards a game. Running back Eric Redwood has scored 21 touchdowns but San Carlos' Anthony Toms always has the final say.

Toms is the Padres' kicker and contributes the equivelent of a touchdown every game. He's made 44 PATs and kicked five field goals, two in Serra's 47-21 win over St. Ignatius on Saturday.

He's also the punter, averaging 34 yards per attempt, and kicks off, usually sending the ball into the end zone.

Jacobs plays on both sides of the ball for Serra. He has 18 tackles, including nine for a loss, and acts as an extra blocker for Redwood (who has ruished for 1,309 yards so far).

Celentano has caught a pass and recorded a handful of tackles on the season. Bowler is a running back and defensive back.
