Local Resident Has Big Day as a Major Leaguer

Belmont's Ryan Cavan gets the call for Thursday exhibition.

Menlo School grad Ryan Cavan was likely minding his own business Thursday morning over at the San Francisco Giants' minor league facility in Scottsdale when he got the call.

He was needed at Scottsdale Stadium to replace last year's postseason hero Marco Scutaro in the starting lineup for a game.

Scutaro reported a little back stiffness, nothing serious.

Cavan had two hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs in the Giants' 10-4 loss to the Colorado Rockies.

Cavan, who has risen through the Giants' system the previous four years, played in his second major league exhibition game. He is hitting .500 this spring, with three hits in six at bats for the big league club.

His RBI single came against Rockies' starter Drew Pomeranz. His home run came off five-year Major League veteran Chris Volstad.

Cavan spent last year with Double-A Richmond, where he hit 10 home runs and drove in 40 runs.

He made his professional debut with the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, a Single-A short season team, where he played with Francisco Peguero, who played in 12 games with the Giants last September.

Cavan advanced to Augusta, a full-season Single-A team, the following season. Among his teammates were Hector Sanchez and Ryan Verdugo, who made his Major League debut with the Kansas City Royals last year.

After spending a year with San Jose in the California League, he went to Richmond.

Cavan has 48 home runs, 242 RBIs and a .264 batting average over his minor league career.
