BASEBALL: Hicks, Madigan Spark Big Scots' Win
Carlmont bounces back from two-game PAL Bay losing streak with 10-1 rout of visiting Terra Nova; Hicks' four RBIs and Madigan's six strong innings on the mound help Scots improve to 8-3.
The Score: Carlmont 10, Terra Nova 1.
The Star: Carlmont High’s Colton Hicks went 3-for-3 and drove in four runs to power the hosts to the Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division rout. The senior catcher kick-started the scoring with an RBI single as the Scots took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, and then he blasted a three-run home run over the left-field fence an inning later on Friday afternoon.
The Turning Point: Hicks’ two-out long ball in the second inning. Carlmont’s Willie Baroncini and Daniel Madigan drew one- and two-out walks, respectively, off Terra Nova starter Nick Manessis (3-1). Then Hicks stepped to the plate and unloaded a deep bomb that staked the Scots to a 6-0 lead. With ace Madigan (3-1) on the hill, that proved more than enough offense.

The Quote: “We can’t let it roll on and keep going, snowballing, because everyone starts complaining. … We needed a good day today. We did exactly what we needed to do.” – Carlmont senior pitcher/first baseman Daniel Madigan, on the importance of snapping a two-game PAL Bay losing streak with a big win over Terra Nova.
What’s Next? Carlmont travels to Tracy to face West on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Scots return to league competition on Wednesday against Menlo-Atherton.

The Bottom Line: The Scots needed a bounce-back victory after losing PAL Bay games to El Camino (5-2) and Terra Nova (3-2) earlier in the week, and they got one in decisive fashion. Hicks anchored a 10-hit attack, and Madigan (six strikeouts, one walk) dominated by allowing two hits and one run in six innings. Carlmont (8-3) improved to 4-2 in what appears to be a very balanced league once again.
Notes: Carlmont’s 10 runs were the second most it has scored in a PAL Bay game this year. The Scots totaled 11 runs in their previous four games. … After hitting no home runs through its first nine games, Carlmont has gone deep once apiece in the last two. … Freshman No. 2 hitter Kyle Barret, who hit a two-run homer against Terra Nova ace Cage Cascone on Wednesday, leads the team with 11 RBIs. The second baseman, who took a .345 average into Friday’s game, singled with one out to begin the Scots’ three-run first. “He’s definitely not playing like a freshman,” coach Rich Vallero said… Terra Nova sophomore David Smathers hit a solo homer with one out in the fifth. That marked the first earned run Madigan allowed this year, snapping that streak at an impressive 23 2/3 innings. Smathers had both of his team’s hits off Madigan. … Carlmont drew seven walks on Friday and only struck out twice.
