Tierra Linda Wins Big at Music Festival

The school's music department shined at the Southern California festival this past weekend.

Tierra Linda Middle School music students took home the Heritage Music Festival’s Festival Sweepstakes Award this past weekend in Southern California.

The award goes to the school with the most well-rounded music program. The school beat out 30 others for the high honor.

“I'm just so happy that our program here at Tierra Linda is strong, thriving and cohesive,” said band leader Joe Murphy. “The most wonderful part of our success is that it took ALL of our music programs (band, choral and orchestra) to win.  And the kids have grown so much from this.”

The school also received the Instrumental Sweepstakes trophy for having the highest combined instrumental scores, the school said.

The Tierra Linda Orchestra and the Tierra Linda Jazz Band both received first place in their divisions, said a statement put out by the school, and band and choir placed second in their divisions.

Last year, the school’s orchestra won the outstanding orchestra group trophy, a feat they accomplished again this year.

“With the passing of Measure A and the support of the San Carlos Educational Foundation, we are allowed to continue bringing these types of experiences to your kids," Murphy said.

“Yesterday, driving back on the bus, I just kept thinking, 'Wow, there are over 130 people on this trip, all of whom will remember this success and this experience forever.' And experiences like this are why we love teaching music. So thank you so much for your help and support.”
