These Notre Dame Students Delivered

Notre Dame High junior Kaela Chavez, with senior Ana Mercado, helped organize a drive that delivered 50 boxes of sanitary products to St. Anthony Foundation, or about 2,000 individual hygiene products.

The students, who were joined by junior Andrea Lim, collected the products in honor of International Women’s Day between March 4 and 8.

St. Anthony Foundation, located in San Francisco, sponsored a “Tsanitary Tsunami” collection to which Notre Dame’s Students in Action Club contributing nearly 33 percent of the total hygiene products collected by the foundation.

“We had set a goal of 100 boxes,” Chavez said. “Though we didn't meet that goal, it was great that students brought in donations.”

The club choose the foundation in part because of Chavez and Mercado, who spent January serving in the St. Anthony’s Dining Room three days a week.

“Driving down to St. Anthony Foundation through the Tenderloin and seeing how excited the staff was to see us and our donations really reminded us that the entire point of the drive was not to meet a specific goal but instead to help women in our community,” Chavez said. “Knowing that the products we collected will provide so many women with access to crucial hygiene products is a wonderful achievement in itself."

Notre Dame High School, in Belmont, is a private Catholic college preparatory school for young women sponsored by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.  The school’s Mission is “to develop responsible young women of active faith, strong intellect, and Christian leadership in an environment of academic excellence and mutual respect.
