San Carlos schools get an A+ from API results

Despite budget problems, seven schools receive high marks.

As San Carlos struggles with its $2.8 million budget deficit and teachers remain uncertain about the stability of their jobs, the city proves its educational program is still among the best in the state.

Every school in the city scored above the statewide performance target for the year, accrding to the newly released 2009-2010 Accountability Performance Index reports. Arundel Elementary, White Oaks Elementary, Britton Acres Elementary and Tierra Linda Middle School all scored in the 90th percentile in the base API section, with the other schools not far behind in the high 89th percentile range.

All seven San Carlos Schools - five elementary, Arundel, Brittan Acres, Heather Elementary, San Carlos Charter Learning and White Oaks and two middle schools, Tierra Linda and Central Middle - scored among the highest in the state in all sections.

"This is a very exciting time," said John Nazar, the newly-appointed Tierra Linda principal. "There are challenges that we face but these scores show that our children are always receiving the best education we can possibly give them."

In 1999, California passed the Public Schools Accountability Act, resulting in annual reports outlining the performance of every school in the state.

According to the current report, every school in San Carlos received an "A" in the category of growth, meaning each school met or surpassed the criteria for excellence. 

As a whole, San Carlos schools were among the highest rated on the peninsula. This year's scores where consistent with the district's past performance where San Carlos also excelled.

Mayor Randy Royce praised the scores and the city's school system. "It's the number one reason year after year why families move to San Carlos," he said. "Our schools are just fantastic and this proves it."
