San Carlos School Board Begins Its Search For New Members

The board will fill two vacancies left by Mark Olbert and Carrie Du Bois.

The San Carlos school district has chosen an appointment process over a special election to fill two vacancies, a decision the board says will fill the vacancies more quickly and inexpensively.

The openings were created after member Mark Olbert was elected to the city council and Carrie Du Bois was elected to the Sequoia School Board.

The city chose an appointment process over a special election that would have cost the city up to $60,000 and left both seats empty until June 2012.

“It would be near impossible for the board to function with only three members for the next six months, so a special election was just impractical,” said school board member Seth Rosenblatt.

Those interested in applying to join the school board should fill out the application by 3 p.m. on Jan. 9. All candidates will have a chance to address the board at the Jan. 12 meeting.

“We seem to be getting a lot of interest from community members,” said superintendent Craig Baker. “I’m optimistic that the board will have a number of qualified individuals from which to choose.”
