The Unbelievable, Totally Coincidental Meeting of the Anne Higginbothams

The two teachers share a name, a profession, and a class full of passionate students, 2,618 miles apart.

It started with a coincidence at an office supply store.

Last summer, Arundel Elementary school teacher Anne Higginbotham went to Staples without her reward’s card and asked the clerk to pull up her information on the computer. That’s when she found there was another Anne Higginbotham who taught Kindergarten. And the S.C. in question?

No, it wasn’t San Carlos, it was South Carolina.

San Carlos Anne wrote South Carolina Anne an email, and the two women agreed their classes should be penpals to work together on writing skills and geography.

The two classrooms will be Skyping live on Friday, May 25, at 9:30 a.m.

"Some of our students who don't want to write are ready to go now because of this project," South Carolina Anne told the Green Citizen in South Carolina. "The kids are so motivated and so willing to do this.

The Green Citizen reported the San Carlos teacher sent her and her students a package containing holiday cards for each student.

South Carolina Anne handed out the cards and then pulled down the classroom's map of the United States, the article said.

“She pointed out a star sticker on the state of South Carolina and asked for a volunteer to come up to put a star sticker on San Carlos, Calif.,” just over 2,618 miles away.
