Innovative Fitness Program for Schools Could be a Good Fit

Jenny Rowe has created a children's fitness program, Recess Lab, which she eventually hopes will help bring P.E. back into the budget-challenged public school system in California and help fight the war against childhood obesity.

Los Altos High grad Jenny Rowe has figured out a way to include bowling, basketball, boxing, tennis, soccer, baseball and being a rock star into a highly-energized psychical education activity without leaving the classroom.

Rowe, whose husband John teaches math at Palo Alto High, founded Xercise Lab, a fitness start-up in Palo Alto in the Town & Country Shopping Plaza.

She has created a children's fitness program, Recess Lab, which she eventually hopes will help bring P.E. back into the budget-challenged public school system in California and help fight the war against childhood obesity.

Rowe and her Executive team, which includes Director of Training Brean Mitchell, Vice president of Corporate Operations Jeanne Jarnot, a Novato resident, and Menlo Park resident Brandee Winikoff, the Director of Business Development, have created a unique fitness program designed for a total body and cardio workout.

Fifth-graders at Juana Briones Elementary School in Palo Alto were treated to a Recess Lab Live. The company's executive team also double as instructors.

"Anyone can be a rock star or play baseball," Rowe said. "You don't have a ball to hit. It's a user-friendly activity."

Juana Briones became the first school in the country to host an Xercise Lab event, which features original music by Music Director Steve Plunkett, a former member of the 80s heavy metal band "Autograph."

The company, which opened in June, has introduced its school program and has begun licensing its programs in fitness clubs.

The company has also developed its own line of clothing, skin care products for kids and family fitness program.

Also involved, as lab advisors, are Stanford senior swimmer Betsy Webb and senior softball player Kelsey Gerhart.

Xercise Lab also offers fitness classes at its location in Town & Country, next door to Deuce France. The Lab is hosting a special Halloween program Wednesday (Oct. 31) at 4:30 p.m. for ages 2-12, accompanied by a parent.

Regular classes are held Wednesdays at 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 10 a.m.
