A former Carlmont High School administrator, Dr. Robert Samuel Hunter III of Menlo Park, passed away after a long illness on July 14 at the age of 79, according to an obituary in in The Almanac.
Dr. Hunter attended Central Elementary School in San Carlos and Serra High School in San Mateo. Prior to receiving three degrees from Stanford University, he served with honor and distinction in the United States Navy (1951-1954).
In addition to his Stanford degrees, Dr. Hunter earned a Doctorate in Organization and Leadership from The University of San Francisco (1982).
Following his service in the Navy, Dr. Hunter became a social studies teacher and chair of the social studies department at Carlmont High School (1959-75). He then served as the school's director of student activities (1977-1986) and a vice principal (1986-1999).
Dr. Hunter may be best known as the originator of the Friends of Millard Fillmore Trivia Hunt in 1962. The hunt, which was designed to improve students' research and problem-solving skills, is still a highlight of the school year for Carlmont students.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marlene (Mori), three children and nine grandchildren.
As stated in The Almanac obituary, a memorial service will be held Saturday, August 11, 10:30 a.m., St. Denis Church, 2250 Avy Avenue, Menlo Park, CA 94025.
