Carlmont Girls Soccer Remains in First Place Tie

The Scots beat visiting San Mateo and are unbeaten in the PAL Bay Division.

Kayla Fong scored in the first half and Emily Stambaugh made an important save in the second half to help the Carlmont High girls' soccer team beat visiting San Mateo, 1-0, in the Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division on Wednesday.

Carlmont High (3-0-1 in the PAL, 7-1-2 overall) remains tied for first place in the league, with Woodside (3-0-1, 8-0-2).

The Scots play another important match Friday, traveling to Burlingame (3-1, 5-3-1) for a 3 p.m. match against the third place Panthers.

Fourth-place San Mateo (1-1-2, 2-3-5) can help make things interesting when it hosts the PAL powerhouse Wildcats at 3 p.m. Friday.

San Mateo suffered its first loss in over a month. The Bearcats were 1-0-5 over their previous six matches, allowing just five goals in that span.

Fong scored in the 25th minute, getting an assist from senior Carolyn Donohoe. The rest was up to the defense and both teams were up to the task.

Stambaugh stopped what could have been the tying score with just under 10 minutes to play. San Mateo's Katie Wischer had a golden opportunity to score, but an active Stambaugh stopped the threat.

Carlmont stayed on the attack, and even produced a couple of scoring opportunities that were turned away.

Sophomore Lauren Racioppi started the match in goal for the Scots, who also got good efforts from senior Megan Stewart and sophomore Lexie Jenkins.
