400 Students To Attend Back To School Dance Tonight

The San Carlos Youth Center hosts the Back To School dance; raises money for the Youth Advisory Council.

Outside the San Carlos Youth Center, Colin Scott couldn't wait for the school dance to start.

Dressed in his signature San Francisco Giants ball cap, Scott gushed about what the dance means to him.

"I have a lot of great memories," said Scott, 12, as the midday sun reflected brightly off of his colorful braces. "It's just a lot of fun."

The event holds a special meaning to the more than 400 middle school students who will attend the Youth Center's annual "Back To School" dance tonight, an event that welcomes 7th, 8th, and 9th graders from all around the peninsula.

Every year, the center hires a DJ and decorates the gymnasium to offer a place for kids to hang out, dance, listen to music, and socialize with their friends.

Lead Youth Development Staff member Matt Taylor, 20, said 400 tickets were sold in less than two weeks. Selling for $5 a piece, the center raised more than $2,000 for the San Carlos Youth Advisory Council, who, according to taylor, will use the money to arrange future activities for the city's youth.

Taylor said the majority of the students come from St. Charles School, Tierra Linda, and Central Middle School.

Tickets were sold out as of mid-afternoon Friday.
