Karen Clapper, the chair of the Planning Commission, was unanimously appointed the San Carlos City Council last night, edging out five other applicants, including one former mayor.
Clapper's presence on the council marks the first time a female has served since Inge Tiegel Doherty's departure in December 2007, about four-and-a-half years ago.
"One statement Karen made resonated particularly strongly with me," said councilmember Mark Olbert over on his blog. "In response to a question about how to foster/accelerate economic development in San Carlos while still preserving the community she spoke about the need to focus more on action and less on advising/studying."
Clapper's selection will leave a vacancy in the Planning Commission that will need filling.
She will be confirmed to the city council at the next official council meeting and her term will expire in November 2013. Clapper told the council she does not intend to run in the general election.
