Rethink Waste to Give Free Tours to School Kids

The free tours will be offered to fourth through sixth graders within the Rethink waste boundaries.

Rethink Waste will offer Free Tours and Bus Transportation for fourth through sixth grade public and private school classes in the RethinkWaste Service Area to the Shoreway Environmental Center to learn about the 4Rs: resource management, conservation and what happens to recyclables, yard trimmings and food scraps and garbage, according to the city's website.

Free Tours will also be offered for community groups and residents.

Tour includes:

A two-hour visit to the Transfer Station, Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), Education Center with museum quality exhibits, Solar and Water Conservation Kiosk (planned), and more.

An opportunity to trace the path of recyclables, food scraps, yard trimmings and garbage from curbside to remanufacturing or disposal.

Learning about resource conservation and the 4Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle, and rot) that are aligned to the State Content Standards.

Hands-on activities that explore how student’s individual actions can help reduce waste.

Pre- and post-tour lessons.

To ensure the safety and comfort of all visitors, a maximum of approximately 40 for both students and chaperones is recommended, not more than 20 visitors at one time will be allowed on the MRF operations mezzanine.

School Groups Tour Program Schedule

From January, 2012 to June, 2012, field trips will be offered as follows:

Monday-Wednesday

9:30 am - 11:30 am

12:30 pm – 2:30 pm

Thursday

9:30 am -11:30 am

(The School Groups tour Program will be offered September to June for the 2012/2013 school year.)
