City Receives Large Grant to Improve Safety Around Arundel Elementary

San Carlos will begin safety improvement projects around Arundel Elementary School

The city announced it will receive a Safe Rote to Schools Grant for $340,800 to help fund a series of “road, crosswalk, school entrance and traffic safety improvements at Arundel Elementary School.”

City officials said safety around Arundel has “long been a concern” and this project has been a topic of discussion at many meetings involving city council and school board members.

“The project improvements are designed to make walking and driving to and from the school a much more safe and inviting process,” said city officials on the city’s website.

The project will focus on improving safety on ‘Phelps Road and the intersection of San Carlos Avenue and Wellington Avenue as well as at the Lower School Entrance and Crosswalk.”

  • All Way Stop at Phelps Road & Arundel Road
  • Mini-roundabout at Phelps Road and Palm Avenue
  • Addition of School Zone Speed Warning and School Vicinity Signs
  • Installation of a 5 foot sidewalk on the West side of Wellington Avenue
  • Sidewalk and Concrete Curb on the Northeast and Northwest Quadrant of the San Carlos Avenue/Wellington Avenue intersection
  • Directional ramps installed on Southeast and Southwest quadrants of the San Carlos Avenue/Wellington Avenue intersection
  • Lighted Crosswalk at the Lower School Entrance and Crosswalk
