Sex Offender Who Stole iPads Sentenced to almost 3 Years in Prison

David John Maze failed to register as a sex offender then attempted to steal iPads from a San Carlos business.

Although a San Mateo County judge could have given a local man up to eight years in state prison last Friday, the convict will not see more than two years and 10 months behind bars.

David John Maze was convicted earlier this year of felony burglary for stealing iPads from Livingly Media in San Carlos in November, 2012.

But it was his rap sheet that made the sentence more inflated than a simple burglary would. Maze, 32, was convicted in 2009 of sending pictures of his genitals to a 15-year-old girl. According to the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office, he has since failed to register as a sex offender.

On the day that landed him his current prison sentence, Maze entered Livingly Media, an online publisher that does not serve walk-in customers. He was talking on his cell phone and an employee asked if he needed help. According to the DA's Office, he said he was looking for a friend and began to leave, at which point an employee noticed he had two iPads in his hands.

The employee snatched the iPads back from Maze and called 911. A sheriff's deputy was able to find Maze in his car a short distance away and arrested him.

Maze's sentence was actually four years in state prison, but he was given credit for 432 days already served, giving him a bit less than three years left behind bars. He was also ordered to pay $350 in fines.
