PREVIEW: Tonight's City Council Meeting To Discuss Fire Services

Fire services will be at the head of the agenda at tonight's meeting.

The San Carlos City Council prepares for a big meeting tonight at 7 pm at City Hall where they will continue their discussion of fire services for the city, the largest issue currently facing the city.

Last week, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors met to review their options on fire services and to determine whether they would be interested in partnering with San Carlos.

The conclusion of that meeting – a decision made by President Carole Groom and Supervisor Adrienne Tissier – saw the Board postpone their decision 30-days while they gathered more information.

Currently open for discussion is the possibility of a mid-county regional fire department that would include Redwood City, San mateo, Foster City, Belmont and San Carlos, should all cities show interest.

Some, like Belmont, have already expressed interest in going a different direction, potentially starting their own independent department.

Others, like Redwood City and the County, have made bids to San Carlos to move in the direction of partnering up.

Tonight, the council will update the city on this issue, discuss the Board of Supervisors meeting, and reevaluate where the city currently is on this issue.

Other items to be discussed tonight include the city staff recommending San Carlos send an already written letter to Governor Jerry Brown concerning Brown’s announcement two weeks ago to “elimininate redevelopment agencies in an attempt to quell some state budget issues.

“The San Carlos Redevelopment Agency yields over $4 million in annual property tax revenue that can be used for capital improvement projects, economic development and the provision of affordable housing in San Carlos,” said city documents. “The Governor’s proposal would not allow the Agency to collect any more property tax revenue than would be necessary to repay its existing bond debt and any other contractual obligations.”

The letter is in opposition to the Governor’s elimination of redevelopment agencies.

Another important issue to be discussed tonight is the city staff’s recommendation that the council “approve and agreement with the California Department of Transportation of $200,000 for oversight of the project Study Report for the Holly Street/US 1010 Interchange Improvement Project,” records show.

According to records, this money was already anticipated in the adopted budget.
