Mountain Lion Spotted In San Carlos

A mountain lion was seen at 2 p.m. Monday afternoon.

A mountain lion was spotted at 2 p.m. Monday near 100 Exeter Drive in San Carlos.

Those signed up for the city's SMC Emergency Alerts received an email around 2:30 p.m. with instructions on how to respond should they encounter a mountain lion.

"If you see a mountain lion DO NOT APPROACH IT," the alert said, "especially one that is feeding or with offspring. Most mountain lions will try to avoid confrontation."

Here are a few tips from the SMC Emergency Alert:

• Avoid hiking or jogging when mountain lions are most active—dawn, dusk and at night.

• Keep a close watch on small children.

• If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks or other objects.

• Pick up small children.
