Mayor, Councilman To Represent San Carlos In Fire Mediation

The closed session decision to appoint Omar Ahmad and Randy Royce to lead mediation talks with Belmont was made after midnight.

Mayor Omar Ahmad and councilman Randy Royce will represent San Carlos during the city’s fire service mediation with Belmont, Vice-Mayor Andy Klein revealed in an early morning email to San Carlos Patch.

The decision was reported out of closed session, he said, but the council adjourned after midnight when no one was present to hear the announcement.

"I am not upset that I am not on the mediation team,” Klein said. “I have full confidence in Mayor Ahmad and Councilman Royce.”

On March 22, Belmont agreed to mediation with San Carlos after a 3-2 vote from their city council. Mayor Coralin Feierbach and Vice-Mayor Dave Warden voted against the proposal.

The mediation was first suggested by Board of Supervisors Carole Groom and Adrienne Tissier.

San Carlans received an update on fire services Monday night from assistant city manager Brian Moura, who announced a special city council meeting April 18, which will host a presentation from potential fire service partner Redwood City, as well as a presentation describing what a stand-alone department might look like.

Moura anticipates Redwood City will present a hybrid/federation model to the council consisting of the fire staff and fire captain being on the San Carlos payroll while Redwood City retains management control and fees.  The two cities would share a fire marshal and emergency medical services.

City staff will also present the outline for a stand-alone department, the details of which continue to be etched out. Moura said the staff continues to work on the budget for a stand-alone department.
