Sgt. Kelly Smith of the San Carlos Police Bureau said sheriff's deputies were contacted by an alert neighbor near the crash site. The neighbor was able to give deputies a description of the driver who they say walked away from the scene in a rainstorm and headed toward his residence.

Smith said deputies saturated the area and a short time later the driver was located by trying to enter his condominium in the 3300 block of Brittan Ave.

According to Smith the driver, whose name has not been released, reported his car stolen, even though it remained at the crash scene.

The driver has been charged with leaving the scene of a traffic accident and with driving under the influence. Smith said the driver may also be charged with filing a false police report because he reported his car stolen.
