iPad Thieving Sex Offender Faces 8 Years in Prison

David John Maze is a multiple strike felon who tried to steal iPads in San Carlos last year.

A San Mateo County judge could give a local man up to eight years in state prison Friday.

David John Maze was convicted earlier this year of felony burglary for stealing iPads from Livingly Media in San Carlos in November, 2012.

But its his rap sheet that makes the sentence so inflated. Maze, 32, was convicted in 2009 of sending pictures of his genitals to a 15-year-old girl. According to the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office, he has since failed to register as a sex offender.

On the day that landed him his current prison sentence, Maze entered Livingly Media, an online publisher that does not serve walk-in customers. He was talking on his cell phone and an employee asked if he needed help. According to the DA's Office, he said he was looking for a friend and began to leave, at which point an employee noticed he had two iPads in his hands.

The employee snatched the iPads back from Maze and called 911. A sheriff's deputy was able to find Maze in his car a short distance away and arrested him.

Maze has been held in custody since his guilty verdict with no option for bail.
