Surgarloaf Fire Contained to Homeless Encampment

One man was taken into custody after a fire broke out in a lone tent on Sugarloaf Mountain in San Mateo on Thursday afternoon.

A homeless man who fire officials say had apparently set up an encampment on Sugarloaf Mountain in San Mateo, was taken into custody by Thursday afternoon after crews responded to a fire that broke out in the man's tent.

Although Sugarloaf Mountain is located in San Mateo, fire and police crews entered the open space parkland from the Belmont side of the mountain. The fire road access is located along Bishop Road in Belmont.

According to Capt. Engler of the , the homeless encampment was located just over the ridge on the northeastern side of the mountain and consisted of just one tent.

Engler said the fire was contained to the man's tent and it appeared that the man had been there for several days.

"We extinguished the fire that was in the tent, and it was contained to the tent," said Engler. He added that no property outside of the tent was damaged by the fire and no injuries were reported.

In addition to fire crews from Belmont, Engine 327 was on the scene.

Details on the homeless man's arrest were not immediately available, but Patch will update this story once more information becomes available.
