Drunk Driver Going Wrong Way on Hwy 280 Arrested

The DUI arrest is the man's second this month.

A 60-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of DUI after he was spotted driving in the wrong direction on Interstate Highway 280 in San Mateo County early Thursday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Joseph John Brignolo, a San Bruno resident, was arrested after authorities received a call at about 4:30 a.m. of a wrong-way driver going south in the northbound lanes of Highway 280, CHP officials said.

A CHP officer spotted the vehicle going the wrong way just south of Farm Hill Boulevard in Woodside. The officer initiated a traffic break and turned on the vehicle's emergency lights while blocking the path of the vehicle, according to the CHP.

The vehicle slowed and finally came to a stop as it lightly pushed against the bumpers of the patrol vehicle. Neither vehicle sustained damage, CHP officials said.

Brignolo was arrested and booked on suspicion of DUI, and authorities later learned that he had been previously stopped by the CHP on March 7 for DUI. In that incident, Brignolo drove his vehicle until the left front tire was down to the calipers, according to the CHP.
