Suspected Gun Shots Were Actually Engine Backfire, Police Said

Engine backfire mistaken for gun shots on Hall Street.

UPDATE 8:53 p.m. Police have determined the "gun shots" reported earlier were actually an engine backfiring, according to an email sent out by the Sheriff's Office.

An investigation resulted in police discovering a car had backfired twice in the area of Bayport and Terminal Way.

At 7 p.m. San Carlos Patch reported that the Sheriff's Office responded to the sound of gunshots - now known to be a backfiring engine -  tonight around the 900 block of Hall Street, said the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.

A house at the end of Hall Street was surrounded and searched, though nothing was found. The home was determined to have not been involved.

Several residents were contacted regarding the gun shots and the neighborhood was searched before citizens and traffic were allowed to resume.
