Obituary: Kurtis Linnell, Age 21, Graduate of Carlmont High School

Kurtis was a talented athlete who excelled at soccer; his CHS soccer teammates honored him before their game on Feb. 1. A memorial service will be held Saturday in Redwood City.

The Carlmont High School boys soccer team paused for a moment of silence before their game on February 1st  to remember and honor a former teammate, Kurtis Linnell, who passed away that day.  Kurtis, 21, fought a brave and difficult battle against Ewing’s Sarcoma.

Kurtis was born on November 23, 1991 and was the eldest child of Mike and Monica Linnell of Redwood City.  His younger brother and sister are in high school.

From an early age, Kurtis loved sports and was an avid athlete.  He played baseball and ran track, but his favorite sports were competitive soccer which he played at the club level in Belmont, San Carlos and Redwood City as well as for his schools, and motocross which he enjoyed with his family and friends.

Kurtis graduated from Carlmont in 2010 and attended Sonoma State University.  He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and was working toward a career in the gaming industry as a QA Analyst at Electronic Arts in Redwood Shores.

A memorial service for Kurtis will be held at 1 pm on February 16, 2013 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Redwood City. A reception will follow at Luther Hall.  In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Kurtis W. Linnell Memorial Foundation at Wells Fargo Bank.

I remember Kurtis as an awesome soccer player from an early age---his spiked hair, muddy cleats and big smile said it all---he was a good friend to my son Charlie, and our family mourns the loss of a young man gone too soon.

So sorry for this family's loss. Its so hard to lose someone so young. It sounds like he made the most of his time here.

It is with great sadness that I learned today of Kurtis's passing - he was a highly valued member of our 2003 AYSO U12Boys team 'The Cyclones' and helped us to a second place that year. Our condolences go out to his family and friends - in our memory he will always be a forward pushing to score for his team. Craig, Jackie and Kevin Burleigh
