We really can change the world

You don’t have to be a billionaire, a politician, a scientist, or an artist in order to change the world for the better.  Sometimes smiling at a stranger on the street can set off a chain of events that can positively influence hundreds of people.

It’s been a while since I’ve pondered ‘the meaning of life’ and what I want my legacy to be.  Those of you that have children can look your legacy in the eyes – in your children’s faces.  The rest of us may need to search a little to find a cause that inspires us to take action and focus our energies.  For me, it’s the American Cancer Society’s efforts to create a world with less cancer.  I’ve just watched a short video on the ACS website about their Cancer Prevention Study (see cps3bayarea.org), a long-term research study where they will be looking at who gets cancer and who does not get cancer – and why.  The numbers are staggering:

·         1 in 3 women will get cancer in their lifetime

·         1 in 2 men will get cancer in their lifetime

Think of it the next time you are out having dinner with friends.  Look around the table and imagine the impact those numbers will have on your dinner party.

Enrollment for the Study will be happening over several days the end of July and first part of August in five locations in San Mateo County.

And San Carlos’ Relay for Life is the first weekend in August  (3rd and 4th) at Burton Park.  Since my last blog, I see we have several more  teams signed up to walk.  Nice work, San Carlos!  We need lots more, though.  This goes back to an earlier point:  You don’t have to be a billionaire to make an impact.  Funds raised in Relay go to cancer research and services for those fighting cancer in our own community.   We have amazing community support behind us, with the Lion’s Club  serving lunch on Saturday afternoon, and the American Legion Post 585 serving dinner.  Trader Joe’s and Nothing Bundt Cakes will also be helping with our Survivor’s breakfast on Sunday morning. What a great time it will be!  Games, movies, music and entertainment!

Let’s get walking, San Carlos! Because we really can change the world.
