San Carlos comes together to create more Birthdays

San Carlos will be hosting its second Relay for Life on Saturday and Sunday, August 3rd and 4th.  It’s a 24-hour event that represents a day in the life of a cancer patient.  It’s an opportunity for community members to

·         Celebrate cancer survivors and their caregivers

·         Remember those we have lost to cancer

·         And fight back by raising funds and awareness

No matter who you are or what your life experience is, there’s a place for you at San Carlos Relay for Life.  Your reason for participating at Relay for Life is as unique as the story that motivates you.  At the dog park today I spoke to a woman that I’ve seen there many times  and I complimented her on her new haircut.  Turns out she’s in the middle of cancer treatment and was wearing a different wig.  I participate to honor the lives of both my sisters, who died way too young, at 43 and 53, and my Mom, who lost her battle five years ago.  Two very different experiences, yet we’ll both be having a blast at Burton Park at Relay.  If you have been affected by cancer in any way, being part of Relay empowers you to fight back.

Last weekend I played sleuth and visited another local city’s Relay to get some ideas,  and to support our Relay Manager at her hometown event.  What a fun day!  Music and Zumba, and food, and raffles, and campouts, and dancing, and people coming up with all kinds of ways to raise money for cancer.  We’ll be doing the same thing at Burton Park on Saturday and Sunday, August 3rd and 4th.  Join us there, or if you can’t attend, say yes to someone who asks you to sponsor them in Relay.  Funds raised support the American Cancer Society’s mission:

1.       Fund ground-breaking research and new clinical trials.

2.       Help guide patients through their cancer journey

3.       Support volunteers as they visit newly diagnosed cancer patients

4.       Cover the cost of providing information to those fighting cancer.  Each day the American Cancer Society takes 2,200 calls from people requesting help or information.

5.       Help cancer patients get to and from their treatments.  Last year ACS helped 15,000 get to their appointments.

6.       Help pay for lodging for patients that must travel away from home to receive cancer treatments.

We have several more teams registered and lots of walkers.  Way to go, San Carlos!

This is a great community event – admission is free.  Join us!
