San Carlos Works For More Birthdays

This year's Relay for Life (American Cancer Society) will be in Burton Park on August 3rd and 4th.

[Editor's note: The following is a blog post by Raynes White, Relay for Life volunteer.]

Summer is just getting started, and San Carlans are working hard to help create more birthdays for everyone.

This year’s Relay for Life (American Cancer Society) will be in Burton Park on August 3rd and 4th. It’s our second Relay – last year’s was a tremendous success, and we’ve set our goals for this year’s Relay higher still.

What is Relay for Life?

It’s a 24-hour community fundraising walk for the American Cancer Society. Participants form teams (from their school, their church, cub scout troop, book club, bowling team,  or family), and hit up their friends, family and co-workers to sponsor the team in the relay.

Team members take turns walking laps from 10AM Saturday until 10AM Sunday.  Tents are raised in the middle of track, and teams have a campout right in the middle of Burton Park!

Since it’s a team event, not everyone from the team needs to be there for full 24 hours.  But there’s so much fun going on, who’d want to leave?  There’s food, and music, and games, and entertainment.

There are also some very important moments during Relay--it’s all about Celebrate, Remember, and Fight Back. Celebrate survivors, and their hard work in the fight of their lives.  Remember those we’ve loved and lost to cancer.  Fight Back by raising money to fund research to end cancer – and to fund services provided by the American Cancer Society to cancer patients right here in our own community.

I hope to journal more on what San Carlans are doing to make our Relay a success.  For now,Cheers to more Birthdays!

Thanks again, Raynes
