San Mateo playwright Lauren Mayer's Never After is a rocking new family musical filled with our most beloved fairytale heroes taking on their villainous counterparts anew. Set to '80s rock, pop and Motown, the show opens with a hard-rock advisory: "This Ain't Your Typical Fairy Tale." Havoc, chase scenes, rock music, missing villains and a happily-ever-after ending ensue.

The show, by Pied Piper Players in its West Coast debut, runs at the new theater at Aragon High School in San Mateo, on Thursday, Jan. 31, Friday, Feb. 1 and Saturday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 2 and Sunday, Feb. 3 at 1 p.m.

Fairy tale characters like Puss N' Boots, Pinocchio, Hansel and Gretel, Sleeping Beauty, Goldilocks all grace the stage in Never After. Bored of their new happy life post-fairy tale, the heroes of our favorite tales re-emerge to invite their villains to engage in yet another battle of good and evil.

Mayer said the characters in her work become like children to her and it's difficult to pick favorites.

"But I have to say that the Goldilocks character in this show is special to me," she says. "I like the way she really speaks to girls. Her lead song is 'Girl Power' and her message is waiting around for a Prince isn't much of a way to live your life! I like that message."

Tickets for Never After are $10 for children and $14 for adults
