Community Corner

CWENCH Party

The Peninsula Sunrise Rotary Club will host the first CWENCH party on November 3, with proceeds to benefit the H2OpenDoors Project. CWENCH, or "Clean Water Enables Community Health," and the H2OpenDoors Project hope to raise money for the purchase of high-tech water filtration units. The event will be held at Sparky's Hot Rod Garage. "Attendees will be spoiled with a great goodie bag, a wide array of food from gourmet burgers to gourmet raw vegan cuisine, an amazing bar, a casino, a live auction and raffle with over 60 prizes," said Barry Jolette, CEO of San Mateo Credit Union and member of the Rotary Club.

Emceeing the event and serving as auctioneer will be Liam Mayclem, host of CBS-5's Eye on the Bay. Live music will be provided by local band Gravy Boat. The auction and raffle will include over 60 items, such as a cruise for two on Oasis of the Seas, tickets to see the Tony Award-winning play The Book of Mormon, VIP tickets for Andrea Bocelli and hotel and restaurant gift certificates. Proceeds from this year's event will go to help bring clean, safe water to two refugee villages in Northern Thailand.

"According to the World Health Organization, half of the hospital beds in the world are filled with patients suffering from water-borne illnesses," says Jon Kaufman, member of the Peninsula Sunrise Rotary. "Over 3.5 million people die each year from these diseases, which could have been prevented if they had access to clean water. That's more people than live in the counties of Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara combined."

Clean water is a precious commodity for millions of people around the world. SunSpring water purifiers represent a viable solution to this problem. These self-contained, solar-powered devices were developed in Colorado and can produce up to 5,000 gallons per day of pure drinking water. An optional wind turbine can provide additional power in regions with less than optimal sunlight.

Tickets to the CWENCH Party are available for purchase at http://www.h2opendoors.org/.
