"I don't think it's an understatement to say I would not be where I am today if it wasn't for my Healthy Cities tutor."

Those were the words of high school senior William Baker as he spoke at the 17th annual Healthy Cities Recognition Reception. The event honored the 175 volunteers who tutored 196 students in the San Carlos School District during the 2013-2014 school year. William is heading to American University in the fall and treasures the support and help he received being part of Healthy Cities Tutoring when he was in elementary school.

In addition to William, two other student speakers and one tutor talked about how Healthy Cities Tutoring made a difference in their lives.

Tutor Liz Hack-Davie worked one-on-one with Vanesa Pinion from first grade through fifth grade, before Vanesa moved out of the area. Vanesa addressed the audience stating, “I am very thankful for everything Liz has done for me because for a number of years she dedicated her patience and kindness to me. And thanks to her I am going to graduate 8th grade with really high grades.” Vanesa recently received the President’s Educational Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence.

Mayor Bob Grassilli and School Board President Beth Hunkapiller were also at the reception to thank the 175 volunteers for their  their commitment to helping children, supporting education and giving back to their community.
