Were You a 'Don' Back in the Day?

Red t-shirts emblazoned with the San Carlos High School "Dons" logo, were designed in 2012 to celebrate the school's 30th anniversary.

As San Carlos High School (1960-82) and city leaders gather to commemorate the school's rich history with a plaque in a ceremony on Sunday, a Patch reader reminded us of a story last summer about red t-shirts featuring the school's mascot.

"Not an alum, but have many friends that are...and they so often and very fondly speak about SC High. Nice to read more about the history and see the loyalty!" said the Patch reader in a Facebook message.

These "Dons" shirts were released 2012 for the 30-year anniversary of the school's closure in 1982, the shirts were created by LT & Associates Marketing's Laura Teutschel, herself a former Don.

"There’s so much nostalgia for San Carlos High, I had to do something fun with it," Teutschel told Patch last August.

Apparently Jennifer Granholm, former governor of Michigan and San Carlos High alumna (Class of '77), was spotted wearing a Dons t-shirt at Hometown Days in  2012.

San Carlos High School opened in 1960, and was closed in 1982 after the Sequoia High School District was forced to close a campus due to declining enrollment. The campus was located on Melendy Drive, now the site of several homes as well as Highlands Park, which was the site of the high school’s sports fields.

The dedication ceremony honoring San Carlos High School will be held on Sunday, June 23 at 11:00 a.m. at Highlands Park, 2600 Melendy Drive. San Carlos High graduate Bill Russell will be the master of ceremonies, and Mayor Bob Grassilli will be the guest speaker. A bronze plaque will be installed at Highlands Park in honor of the former school.
