Heather Crossing Guards Honored for Getting Kids to School Safely

Crossing guard volunteers LuAnn and Bill McGuigan will see their fifth and final child graduate from Heather Elementary School this week. The McGuigans have been at Heather for 22 years.

They greet your child with a smile and a “good morning” as they deftly usher them across the street or out of the car and safely onto school grounds. They have a knack for quick, cheerful small to parents, caregivers and even family pets, and have undoubtedly retrieved their share of forgotten lunch boxes and tied a few shoelaces.

On Monday, Heather Elementary School in San Carlos honored its all-volunteer crossing guard team during its morning assembly.

“We have been so fortunate to have a community of volunteers to ensure our students' safety everyday as they come to and from school,” said PTA president Meredith Park.

Park called the entire crossing guard team to the front of the assembly where the entire student body and staff gave them a round of applause. The Heather crossing guards are: Kristen Roccaforte, Karry Saunders, Linga Mataele, Sherry Kanadjian, Ellen Shea, Edna Leoplod, Eric Espinoza, Heather Dow, Amy Kunde, Hillary Wiessinger, Vicki Zung, Lynn Reagan, Rafael DeSoto, Young McGrady, and Kate Wormington.

LuAnn McGugian, who, with her husband, Bill, started the crossing guard program at Heather, received an Very Special Person award for helping students arrive safely at school. The McGuigans have been part of the Heather community for 22 years. Their fifth and youngest child will graduate from Heather this week. Bill McGuigan is also well known in Belmont where he is a corporal with the Belmont Police Department.

“Single handedly these two started the crossing guard program when a Heather student was nearly hit in the crosswalk at Melendy. This was a labor of love and LuAnn and Bill have worked strenuously to organize this group of volunteers for the last two years,” said Park in her presentation to the McGuigans.

In addition to the crossing guards, Principal Pam Jasso recognized other Heather volunteers with Honorary Service Awards: Ruby MacMitchell, Liz Benedict, Bob and Janice McLaughlin and Aida Paragas.

The final day of school in the San Carlos School District is Thursday, June 13.
