San Carlos Man in Stolen Car Leads Police on Hwy. 101 Pursuit

Belmont police arrested the suspect early Thursday morning.

A San Carlos man in a stolen car led Belmont police on a pursuit early Thursday that ended with a crash in San Mateo.

According to Belmont police, the suspect, Mitchell Lashley, 25, is suspected of stealing a red 1994 Honda Civic in San Mateo and leading police on a pursuit after a routine traffic stop.

The incident began at about 3:20 a.m. Thursday when a Belmont officer pulled the Honda over in the 400 block of Ralston Avenue and ran a license check. The officer learned that the vehicle had been reported stolen out of San Mateo.

The Honda proceeded onto northbound Hwy. 101, and the officer followed waiting for other police units to arrive before attempting to stop the vehicle.

Police say that when officers attempted to stop the vehicle on Hwy. 101 near Third Avenue in San Mateo, the driver accelerated and exited the freeway at Dore Avenue.

He then led officers south on Bayshore Boulevard to Second Avenue where crashed into a guardrail and fled on foot. Officers located him in a nearby yard and took him into custody.
