San Carlos Girl Brings Home Heifer

You can meet Nicole Nielsen and her heifer, Marie Ann, at the San Mateo County Fair, June 8-16.

Patch readers may recall a story last December about Nicole Nielsen, a member of the San Carlos/Eaton Hills 4-H Club who entered a Future Farmers of America Heifer Giveaway Contest.

Nicole was asking for your vote so she could win the Sullivan Ranch heifer calf and raise her in San Mateo County and show her at fairs.

“My goal is to educate the public about agriculture in California, which is sometimes hard to do in the Bay Area,” said the 13-year-old about her entry in the national Heifer Giveaway Contest in December.

Well, Nicole’s mom Robin recently told San Carlos Patch that her daughter was successful in her bid to win the heifer, whom Nicole named Marie Ann.

“We managed to get Marie Anne in March, she was delivered to Grass Valley, where Nicole lived for about five weeks with her grandparents. A local rancher up there helped Nicole halter break the heifer,” Robin told Patch.

Nicole and Marie Anne arrived in San Mateo county a few weeks ago, and the heifer is now housed in Woodside.

“Nicole works with her heifer every day and will be showing at the San Mateo County Fair. She already showed at her first show in Roseville,” said Robin. (See photos of Marie Ann accompanying this article.)

The San Mateo County Fair will run June 8-16 at the San Mateo County Event Center. The Livestock and Agriculture exhibits at the Fair are always popular favorites for children and adults. You can have your questions answered about livestock, such as, "Can pigs really run a six-minute mile," and, "Do cows really lie down when they storm coming?"
