Male Gonorrhea Diagnoses Spike in San Mateo County

Sexually transmitted diseases got off to a raging start in San Mateo County in the first quarter 2013, with little positive change in diagnoses from the same time period last year.

According to a report released by the San Mateo County Health System, diagnoses of chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, hepatits B and hepatitis C are all relatively static in Q1 of 2013 compared to Q1 of 2012.

There is a noticeable downturn in positive HIV tests this year, however, the Health System only conducted about half as many tests in Q1 of this year as they did in the same three months last year. Still, the positive test rate dropped to .006 per test from .012.

The one significant change in the numbers is in male gonorrhea diagnoses, which spiked 52 percent. This jump was not observed in any neighboring counties.

See all the STD numbers for the quarter below. The numbers in parentheses indicate the diagnoses in the same category from Q1 of 2012:

Chlamydia: 430 (433)
