Before Digital: Learn the Art of Preserving Family Photos

Photo conservation takes a bit of extra TLC, but preserving family history is well worth the effort. Learn how at a special presentation at the SMC History Museum this Saturday.

The San Mateo County History Museum will present Photograph Conservator Gawain Weaver, who will speak on preserving family photographs on Saturday, July 13 at 1 p.m.  

Weaver completed a two-year fellowship in the Advanced Residency Program in Photo Conservation at the George Eastman House and Image Permanence Institute at Rochester, New York in 2007.  Today he teaches photograph preservation at the San Jose State University School of Library and Information Science.

Weaver will discuss types of photographs found in family collections, clues to dating them and procedures to preserving them.  The program is free with the price of admission to the Museum: $5 for adults, $3 for students and seniors.  

This presentation is a part of the Museum’s, “Courthouse Docket” series, which is sponsored by Cypress Lawn Heritage Foundation.

The San Mateo County History Museum is located at 2200 Broadway, within the 103-year-old “Old Courthouse” in Redwood City.  It features exhibits related to the use of natural resources, suburban development, ethnic experience and entrepreneurial achievement on the Peninsula from the times of the Ohlone Indian through today.
