Progress at Restaurant on Former Hardware Store Site

The weeds have been cleared and there's a sign on the front door. After remaining vacant for years, the corner of St. Francis Way and Laurel Street in San Carlos is coming back to life.

There's a Saltbox being planted in San Carlos that should be able to feed the neighborhood.

If the hardware store owner had his way, he'd still be selling nails and other supplies. But he didn't own the building, which was sold several years ago.

The store, formerly White Oaks Hardware, on St. Francis Way and Laurel Street in San Carlos lay dormat, even as the new owners were preparing the way to open a restaurant with an outdoor dining area.

While no workers were around early Friday afternoon, there's certainly signs that the Saltbox will be hopping soon.

While the neighbors certainly appreciated the hardware store, a new restaurant on the south end of Laurel Street (aka 'SOLA'---South Laurel), may provide just the impetus for further expansion.

And who knows? Perhaps that end of Laurel Avenue will suddenly spring to life with lighted trees and a farmer's market of its own.

Is a restaurant what you wanted to see replacing the hardware store? Let us know in the comments.
