A brush fire that started in a San Carlos backyard has been extinguished, a Redwood City fire battalion chief said.

The quarter-acre fire was reported at 4:21 p.m. near the 3400 block of Brittan Avenue, Battalion Chief Dave Pucci said.

The blaze was sparked accidentally when a resident was welding outside and a fire started in the dry grass, Pucci said.

The fire was put out just before 5 p.m., he said.

A few homes were briefly threatened, Pucci said, but fire crews were able to contain the flames and no damage was reported.

Crews from Cal Fire and the San Carlos and Redwood City fire departments responded to the blaze, he said.

Update: Thursday 5:12 p.m.

San Carlos Deputy Fire Chief Stan Maupin reports that the fire is largely controlled.
