Because You've Got to Have Friends

A new session of Friends Play Group for socially delayed children will begin in October. The group uses theater arts activities to to teach kids new skills.

The San Carlos Children’s Theater (SCCT) has scheduled a Fall 2013 Session of Friends Play Group for children ages 6 - 9 years. The session will begin on Saturday, October 5 and continue through November 9 with the movie premier on November 16.

Designed for socially delayed children and those on the autism spectrum, SCCT’s Friends Play Group is a theater based social skills program that uses theater arts, yoga and drama activities tailored to help children become better social thinkers.
"The program is unique in its use of video - we film the children as they demonstrate their newly learned skills," said Linda Young, special education teacher.

"At the end of the session, the children invite their parents to a movie premier where they see themselves participating in skits and games specifically written to enhance their social understanding.  Each child is given a take-home DVD that can help reinforce their social skills each time they watch it.

The Fall session of Friends Play Group is scheduled for Saturday mornings from 10:00 - 11:00 am at the Barrett Community Center, Room E, in Belmont and can accept a maximum of ten children.

Space is limited, and on-line sign up is available at the SCCT website (http://www.sancarloschildrenstheater.com/classes_camps.html).  For more information about fees, scheduling, curriculum and additional play groups, call Shelley Frost at 650/906-8296 or e-mail at shelley@friendsplaygroup.org.www.friendsplaygroup.orgwww.sancarloschildrenstheater.com
