What’s Going on With this Sailboat?

Here’s the story with the trimaran that’s been abandoned next to the boat ramp in Pillar Point Harbor.

It’s been a few weeks now that a trimaran next to the boat ramp in Pillar Point Harbor has been marooned on the beach. Sails are out of the hull and buried in the sand. Half Moon Bay Patch reader Sean McCabe observed, “They could have towed it to the inner harbor and beached it three weeks ago when the hulls were still intact.”

The San Mateo County Harbor District is presently getting prices for the removal and destruction of the boat.

“The owner sold it to someone else who then found the repairs too large and abandoned it. They were an anchor out in the harbor, not in a slip,” said harbor master Scott Grindy.

The harbor district removed all the fuel type pollution issues right away, and once they have a price for the removal job, they will pull it out and dispose of it for good.

“Typically, the Department of Boating and Waterways allows us to get rid of the vessel when in our harbor such as this one, then we submit our incurred costs to them for reimbursement,” said Grindy.

The cost for the job will be approximately $6,000 said Grindy.

“In regards to vessel owners responsibility, we typically will take the various actions to contact the owner, we may take some financial steps towards them but the Boating and Waterways fund allows us in the meantime to get the damaged boat out of the water and harbor before it can do more harm.”
