Week in Review: Top Cop Says Outsourced Policing is Working, Calls San Carlos 'Safe City'

Popular 2011 Hot Harvest Nights Farmer's Market holds year's last event; Man accused of sending white powder to City Hall pleads not guilty, but held to answer in superior court.

Monday, September 12

Nearly after a year since outsourcing it’s police department, San Carlos remains a “safe city in a safe county,” in a Monday night presentation.

Rothaus said that property crimes remain the biggest concern to San Carlans, citing complacency as a contributing factor.

Compared to similar sized and populated cities, San Carlos has less reported crime than nearby Burlingame to the north or Los Gatos to the south, but a higher crime rate than Belmont or Foster City.

“We live in a safe city and we think because it’s safe we don’t have to lock our car doors  or take certain measures, but we do,” he said.

Rothaus said felony arrests and traffic citations are up since the sheriff’s department took over law enforcement functions in a cost-cutting move, and that 80 law enforcement satisfactions surveys local residents recently returned (268 surveys went out), a total of just five of the 320 performance ratings on each survey received an “unsatisfactory” grade.”

 

Monday, September 12

Police said separateoccurred on Monday, with an incident reported on the 700 block of Elm Street followed by a similar incident near the intersection of El Camino Real and Brittan Avenue at 11:53 a.m.

 

Wednesday, September 16

A San Leandro man accused of sending envelopes containing white powder to San Carlos and South San Francisco city halls that a seven-months pregnant female employee was exposed to was.

Investigators determined the envelopes contained foot powder. Phillip Harold Adams Jr., 37, pleaded not guilty to felony charges for sending a false weapon with the intention to cause fear, prosecutors said.

 

Thursday, September 15

San Carlos Thursday night to enjoy this year's last 2011 Hot Harvest Nights Farmer's Market. San Carlans enjoyed great eats while the bluesy sounds of the band "Rip-TiDE" filled the air.

 

Saturday, September 17

An environmental advocacy group that earlier this week called out San Carlos for feeding the San Francisco Bay with one of the Bay Area’s filthiest waterways also.

Oakland-based “Save the Bay,” which each year names the Bay Area’s Top 5 “trash hot spots,” listed San Carlos’ Pulgas Creek among its worst offenders, but the environmental advocacy group also gave the city high marks for its efforts to clean up its mess.

The group’s sixth annual Top 5 list was announced in advance of today’s 27th Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day. San Carlos is participating in the effort, holding its own .
